"What is a Manufactured Home?"

Factory-built homes…manufactured homes…modular homes…panelized homes.  Think they are all the same?  They're not.  With the advances in today's factory construction process, the terminology can get confusing.

Factory-Built Homes:

Many types
of residential structures are constructed in a factory setting.  Under this umbrella definition are several different factory-built structures:

   1.  Manufactured Home:  A single-family structure built in a factory to the federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (commonly known as the HUD Code).  Manufactured homes may consist of one or more sections which are transported from the factory to the home site for installation.

   2.  Mobile Home:  A factory-built structure built before June 15, 1976 - the year the HUD Code went into effect.  Mobile homes are designed to be used as single-family structures.

   3.  Modular Home:  A factory-built structure constructed in one or more sections which complies with state or regional construction codes.

   4.  Panelized Home:  A factory-built structure built in "panels" according to state or regional codes, and which are assembled at the site.
